Lady Madonna

Release date: 15 March 1968

Lady Madonna, children at your feet,
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet.
Who finds the money when you pay the rent?
Did you think that money was heaven sent?

Friday night arrives without a suitcase.
Sunday morning creeping like a nun.
Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace.
See how they run.

Lady Madonna, baby at your breast,
Wonder how you manage to feed the rest.

See how they run.

Lady Madonna, lying on the bed,
Listen to the music playing in your head.

Tuesday afternoon is never ending,
Wednesday morning papers didn't come,
Thursday night your stockings needed mending,
See how they run.

Lady Madonna, children at your feet,
Wonder how you manage to make ends meet.

"Lady Madonna" is a song by the Beatles, primarily written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon-McCartney). In March 1968, it was released as a single, backed with "The Inner Light." The song was recorded on 3 and 6 February 1968 before the Beatles left for India. This single was the last release by the band on Parlophone in the United Kingdom, where it reached No 1 for the two weeks beginning 27 March, and Capitol Records in the United States, where it reached No 4 for the week beginning 23 March. All subsequent releases, starting with "Hey Jude" in August 1968, were released on their own label Apple Records, under EMI distribution, until the late 1970s, when Capitol and Parlophone re-released old material.

The song, which was recorded in five takes, made its first album appearance on the 1970 collection Hey Jude. The recording began with three takes of the basic rhythm track, with McCartney on piano and Starr playing the drums with brushes.
